Paapa Essiedu has finally revealed the extreme reactions his controversial casting in the upcoming HBO series, Harry Potter, brought to his life.

The popular British actor, who returned to the headlines due to his disputed role in the new program, has shed light on the "extremism" he faced in his life after playing Severus Snape.

In a recent in-depth interview, Paapa remarked, "I’ve had some extreme responses over Snape casting."

"There have been some extreme responses, and I’d be lying if I said that, you know, I’m a completely impenetrable robot, automation, you know. But I mean, there’s another question to do with like how you receive feedback and like social media and algorithms and why it is that certain things get pushed to the front and certain things don’t, it’s not a question," he added.

He also weighs in on the responses, which ultimately boosted his confidence and gave him the courage to move forward in his life, despite receiving the upsetting death threats.

For those unaware, Paapa Essiedu's death threats drama emerged in March 2026, following the announcement and subsequent online backlash regarding his casting as Professor Severus Snape, which was previously portrayed by the late English actor Alan Rickman, in all eight Harry Potter films.

HBO's upcoming television series will be released on December 25, 2026. Its first trailer has broken the records of HBO Max viewership.
