Indian actor Thalapathy Vijay, who works predominantly in Tamil cinema, announced his foray into politics on February 2, 2024.

The Hindustan Times reported that Vijay has launched his own political party named Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which means Tamil Victory Party.

As per Indian media, Vijay is set to contest in the 2026 Legislative Assembly polls in India through his new party, but will not be taking part in the 2024 elections.

The news was shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by the party page, which was later reposted by Vijay himself.

Pinkvilla shared a rough translation of Vijay's message as well, pointing out how the star 'criticized the existing political environment' in his message saying that there were several “administrative malpractices”, and a “corrupt and divisive political culture”.

As per Vijay's message, 'he will actively take up his role as President once he is done with his present film commitments', which include Venkat Prabhu's Greatest of All Time or GOAT.

His fans have had mixed reactions on social media, with some lauding his decision to move away from cinema and into politics, while others seemed disheartened.

One fan wrote, "Welcome Thalapathy Vijay. He comes into TN politics at a very interesting time. Perhaps the best time. Can he make a real difference? In recent history, many superstars have disappointed in politics. Vijay's actions will be watched keenly," while another said, “My man is leaving his peak phase of career and all set to start his political party. No guts, no glory! #Vijay #TVK."

Meanwhile, some downcast fans also shared their thoughts, with one writing, "Big loss to the industry and hopefully a gain for the TN people via his political career."
