Brief History of the World Cup

The idea of World Cup cricket is not very new but it is old one. The first attempt in this connection was made in 1912 when three cricket-playing countries Australia, England and South Africa arranged a World Championship in 1912.

Due to bad weather the three-way series could not be successful and the dream of the World Cup could not come true until 1975. The credit goes to England, which arranged the first cricket World Cup in 1975. The England’s hectic efforts made this global sports event successful. The six Test playing nations England, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies, India and Pakistan were joined by Sri Lanka and East Africa in this World Cup.

This global carnival of sports has been held seven times so far and the eighth World Cup 2003 is being played in African continent with the opening ceremony taking place in Cape Town on Saturday, February 8.Ten test playing and four ICC-associated nations are participating in this event. The first match of the 8th World Cup will be played on Feb 9th between South Africa and West Indies at Cape Town. The final event will be held in Johannesburg on 23rd March 2003.

For the third time running the World Cup was held in England. But this time it was to provide one of the biggest shocks in the history of limited overs cricket.

Expanded tournament with a new format

The 1996 World Cup was held in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, with games spread out across the sub-continent. It was to produce unlikely winners at the end.

Aussies triumph again after titanic struggle

The 1999 World Cup proved to be a fantastic event that ended with our very own Lance Klusener as Player of the Tournament.
