FASHION UPDATE
Must buys this summer

The
jumpsuit
As a columnist wrote about jumpsuits in the Guardian recently, "Can
any woman really wear one? Of course. It matters not whether you can
wear a jumpsuit - simply that you must." We couldn't agree more.
This one-piece item is a definite must-have. A well-tailored jumpsuit
gives you a playful yet sophisticated edge and is an incredibly versatile
piece of clothing. Designers who have made their own take on the jumpsuit
include Sadaf Malaterre, Maheen Karim, Ismail Farid and Feeha Jamshed
for Teejays. |

Kaftan
What's not to love about the kaftan? This must-have wardrobe
item not only covers you from head to toe - but its loose and
floaty air makes it a perfect for these brutal summers. Earlier
favoured to sleep in, the kaftan has emerged as one of the biggest
summer trends. Whether you use it as a cover-up at the beach,
while going out or to a dinner party, the kaftan should definitely
be a part of your closet. Sana Safinaz's screen-printed kaftans
in chiffon flew off the rack at Ensemble on their debut, but
the duo is taking order on this coveted item. Other designer
versions to check out are by Iman Ahmed's Body Focus, Khaadi
Khaas, Sonya Battla and Atiya Khan.
Harem pants
They sparked quite a fashion sensation when western designers
took this costumey item out of the realm of belly dancers and
Aladdin to the catwalks. A variation on our very own shalwar,
harem pants come in a variety of styles to suit most body types.
There are dressier versions available in silk or casual, everyday
ones in cotton and linen. Couturier |

Kazmi showed her version at her first full-scale fashion showing last
year, Annie Ali Khan debuted Maheen Khan's silk harem pants at the
LSAs, Sanam Agha donned her own design on the red carpet recently
and several it girls have been seen around town wearing Tara Mahmood's
casual take on them. Other variations are available at Sonya Battla
and Teejays. |

The voluminous
kurta
Carrying on from this season's volume-is-va-voom trend, the voluminous
kurta is definitely a must-buy. One look at Kamiar Rokni's take
on the age-old tradition of 'kalis' is enough to convince one. Whether
you buy yards and yards of fabric and make your own, or opt for
Kamiar's prêt collection, stay breezy and beautiful in the
kurta.
The patriotic
t-shirt
Look at the mood in the air - it's more important now than ever
to wear your patriotism on your sleeve. Check out Ammar Zaidi's
Daku line, now available at Munib Nawaz's stores in Pakistan, or
the t-shirts designed by Rising Pakistan, available at multi-label
retail stores throughout the country. Or if you're in search of
something a little more subtle, Sara Shahid (Sublime) has just launched
her very first range of organic white t-shirts today. If all else
fails, you could just dig up the old t-shirts you would once wear
to cricket matches and rediscover why being green is so cool.
