LSA 2008 Hits and Misses
Instep presents the hits and misses of the Lux Style Awards 2008 - recapping the moments that made people laugh and applaud..or those that made them cringe.

Hits
National Anthem

A clear hit of the evening - and something that should be lauded - was the fact that the National Anthem played before the ceremony started. And it was Geo's version of it with stars like Shafqat and Hamid Ali Khan, Tarannum naz, Faakhir, Ali Azmat etc. It was great to hear the music playing and people standing up as the strains of 'Pak Sar Zameen' echoed around the venue. This is definitely something that should be continued on - not just at the LSAs but also at other major shows.

Reema & Shaan
As Reema and Shaan took to the podium while Reema presented him with the award for Best Actor, Shaan truly hit Reema where it hurt - by referring to her age! As they stood together, Shaan turned to Reema and said, "And Reema here is my senior in films…" to which Reema immediately yet very politely rebuked him, "Shaan, please correct your words. We started out in the industry together and did our first film together." Reema's quip left Shaan quiet momentarily, until he laughingly replied, "Well, I like to play the elderly card, if you know what I mean." Reema's quiet tact while setting Shaan straight was definitely a hit!

Ali Azmat promoting Zeb
& Haniya

Zeb & Haniya, the female musical duo are making waves in the musical industry since their album release. The girls were presenters at the LSAs for the award for Best Live Act, which went to Strings. Since Strings were a no-show, Ali Azmat told Zeb and Haniya, "I think you should take the award, since you'll be receiving one next year anyway." That praise, coming from someone who has been a part of the music scene for decades, was definitely a lovely thing to say to two newcomers.

Asif Raza Mir: As graceful as ever
Asif Raza Mir has returned to showbiz after 12 years and this was the first time he attended the LSAs. He gracefully came up on stage and thanked the entire team of Meray Dard Ko Jo Zuban Milay especially the director Ali Rizvi. He was really thankful to the industry for accepting him back after years of disappearance and for giving him important roles in quality projects. He also thanked the LSAs for providing a platform to recognize and appreciate the talent of the entertainment industry. Off stage, he said he was surprised to get the award as he thought Shafi Muhammad was a better contender but he was grateful nevertheless. It's more grace and charm like his that the LSAs sure could do with!

Momina Duraid: It's a team effort
Momina Duraid draped in blue sari looked beautiful yet elegant. For Man-o-Salwa she walked up on stage and thanked the whole team of Moomal Production. "It's a team effort and can't be credited to me alone," said Momina. "Besides, I would like to thank my husband, Duraid, and mother-in-law, Sultana Siddiqui, for their utmost support and belief in me."

With this she also emphasized that there should be a category for Best Writer as well without whom the plays are simply meaningless. Quite a lot of things said in a small speech but before leaving the stage, she thanked the LSA and all her viewers for liking the serial. Last but not least she thanked her director, Babar Javed. "Babar did a great job with it and worked really hard," said Momina. "He truly deserved the best director award and I would have been happier if Man-o-Salwa won for the best director rather than the best play." Hmm, now that could be taken in bad taste by Anjum Shehzad, who actually won the award, but it was said in appreciation for her director and not mockery for the other.

Misses

Maheen Karim: From acceptance speeches to scavenging for food
If you've ever pondered what LSA award winners get up to after the show is over - rest assured, it's not always a glamorous round of after parties. One spotted Maheen Karim, this year's Best Prêt Designer winner, standing at the food serving line at 3:00 am and imploring the cooks to serve her friends and her some food so they could finally eat.

Ali & Faakhir: The Joker
Ali Azmat's rapid-fire exchange with Faakhir, while downright personal, had the crowd howling with laughter. Ali instantly told Faakhir as the latter stepped out on the stage, decked out in a black tux: "Faakhir, last year I told Ammar Belal this, but today you look very pretty!" and then followed it up with "Faakhir, the waiters are asking for their clothes back!" This was probably the last straw for Faakhir, who retorted: "The world loves a joker." Ali clearly couldn't resist that - he snapped back with: "Yeah, you look like a joker and I talk like one!" The frosty silence that followed for the next few seconds on stage was - priceless!

The quips that worked… and those that did not.
Ali's quips on the fashion industry were hilarious at times: "Kamiyaar tang na kar" and Tapu Javeri and Khawar Riaz getting together to start a helpline called '1-800-photo-photo-photo lo'. However the quip on Nauman Ijaz was in very bad taste, as it made fun of a Hindu god as well as an actor. It's just not on at a public platform.

Atiqa Odho's endless speech
Atiqa Odho's heart was in the right place as she spoke about breast cancer awareness (a cause the LSAs were supporting this year) and about 'letting women live' as she spoke about Iman Ali's role in Khuda Kay Liye. But because it was unscripted, it appeared more of a disjointed ramble than something to applaud - and while her themes were appreciated, the way it was done left many wishing she had a written script to follow.

Atif Aslam: Best Dressed? More YMCA instead
Atif Aslam may have tried to make a statement by having him and his entourage dress as police cops, but he clearly didn't deserve to win an award for the Best Dressed Male on the red carpet. He could have won Best Dressed at a fancy dress party, though! Looking at Atif, one could only conjure up images of Village People dancing to 'YMCA'. Atif's attire: definitely not the stuff Best Dressed men are made of!

Bushra Ansari:
The Saba Hameed fan

Though Bushra Ansari had a negative character in Vani, she bagged the Best Actress Award against Saba Hameed. Bushra Ansari appeared shocked to receive the award and said, "I was so sure Saba will win thin one. How did it come to me? Aap se koi ghalti to nahin huyee, dobara check kar lein." (There might be a mistake in reading out names, please check it again).

Though she thanked the LSA and the people who thought she deserved it, she kept on insisting that she is feeling really bad for Saba Parvaiz. "Not that I am not a good actress, I am!" added Bushra. "But this time, Saba deserved it more than anyone else."

Well, Saba might not be expecting it but

now she'd feel worse for not getting the silver lady.

Saima: Not enough firepower
Saima's performance on Reshma's number 'Hai O Rabba' was rather forgettable. Reshma's songs are beautiful and soul stirring. But dancing on them is far more difficult. Imagine Saeen Zahoor's performance minus Fawad Khan. This is what Reshma's performance was like. It didn't have the kind of fire that one hoped for.

Saima's performance at the LSAs in 2006 with Shaan on 'Tera Ishq Nachaya' was far more memorable. It was fiery. But this time around, Saima couldn't recreate the same magic.
